Greywacke - Sauvignon Blanc 2016
They say that nostalgia isn’t what it used to be, but this wine certainly brings back happy memories of the early days of Cloudy Bay, which isn’t surprising, given that Kevin Judd was chief winemaker there for 25 years. This is his third vintage of Greywacke and although it is refreshingly dry, it nonetheless has a discreetly impressive concentration of ripe, succulent fruit which, in its reluctance to try and win you over straight away with caricature flavours, gives the wine a retrained power, like a garrulous person forced to be silent in a library. The flavours work harmoniously, with lime sherbet, passion fruit and lemongrass displaying fine balance and intensity. It’s a seriously stylish Sauvignon Blanc that slowly impresses itself upon you with its elegance, complexity and stony, flinty character.
